Message because the process uses toxic chemicals. The use of toxic chemicals require federal and state EPA permits which are a pain in the a$$!

A lot of companies stopped chroming wheels or started to send them to Mexico for chroming where there are less stringent environmental restrictions. There is a company in California that chromes wheels:

The variations of wheel surfaces you see now are cheaper than the chroming process. Chrome wheels are becoming rarer because of the above noted restrictions.
